The name of this region rich in culture can be literally translated as "at the foot of the mountains" and is the biggest in Italy. The vineyard area of Piemont with the capital Turin encompasses about 60,000 hectares.
Piemont lies in an enormous Alpine valley, on the south-western and eastern slopes of which wine is cultivated in cool climate. The maturing period therefore takes a long time and is beneficial to the extraordinary aromas. The terroir often consist of volcanic tuff with frequent occurrence of calcareous soil.
Most Italian top-quality wines - apart from the Tuscan ones - are coming from Piemont. 75 percent of the wines cultivated are red ones, headed by the extraordinary Baroli and Barbaresci. About one quarter of the wines cultivated bear the DOC (G) predicate.
Other wines strongly represented in Piemont are Barbera with about 50 percent of the cultivation surface, Dolcetto, Gattinara, Gavi, Grignolino, Moscato d'Asti and Nebbiolo d'Alba as well as sparkling Asti Spumante.
Among the winery owners famous all over the world are Martinetti, Pelissero, Aldo Conterno and Bruno Giacosa.
