The largest island in the Mediterranean Sea to the southwest of Italy at the same time, with its 135,000 hectares, has the largest cultivation surface. On 70 percent of the grounds there, which are frequently of volcanic origin, white grape varieties like Catarratto Grillo, Insolia and Trebbiano are growing up to an altitude of 900 metres. The red varieties are dominated by Nero d´Avola, Nerello and Syrah.
The most famous of all Sicilian wines is still likely to be the sweet Marsala wine. Many excellent IGT wines (table wines with declared geographic origin) are still being produced in large quantities. DOC wines are growing on only 3 percent of the surface. A first DOCG classification took place in 2004.
Cusumano, Morgante, Tasca d´Almerita, Pellegrino and Planeta are well-known producers.
