In the northern part of South Tyrol in the province of Bolzano, two thirds of red and one third of white wines are being cultivated on 6,000 hectares exclusively at an altitude of more than 500 metres on the slope and hill sites. Almost all of them are DOC-certified.
Approx. 80 percent of the red wines derive from the domestic Vernatsch grape. The white wines are dominated by Pinot Blanc and Chardonnay having a share of more than 50 percent.
One of the most renowned personages in the wine world is Giorgio Grai. Furthermore there is a lot of cooperative production in South Tyrol, e.g. in the cooperative of Bolzano (KG Bozen).
The southern Trentino geographically corresponds to the province of Trento with 7,100 hectares of vineyard area. In the gravelly alluvial plane of the Etsch valley and on the precipitous slopes of the side valleys, winery owners grow the typical red Teroldego and white Nosiola as well as Chardonnay grape varieties, which are prospering magnificently on account of the mild climatic influence of the Lake Garda situated to the south.
Excellent wines come from Lavis and Cesconi.
