The hilly region around Tarragona, situated close to the Mediterranean Sea encompasses only 1,600 hectares, but provides some of the most famous and highest-quality wines of Spain.
On terraced slate soils - sometimes with very small yields per hectare - particularly dense, concentrated wines rich in alcohol content are created having a high storage potential. Autochthonous varieties of Garnacha and Carineña alternate with international grapes of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Pinot Noir.
World-renowned vineyards include Cims de Porrera, Mas Martinet and Álvaro Palacios.
